Solar-Powered Buoy
Location
Costal Oceanography and Autonomous Systems Lab
Date
October 2023 - Present
I am constructing a solar-powered buoy to measure concurrent wind speed and wave height. I first validated the two anemometers to be used on the buoy, an Airmar and an RM Young. We took hours of high-resolution data out in the boatyard that I analyzed using MATLAB. These sensors will collect data on a CR500 data logger and an SD card on an Arduino in a BlueRobotics enclosure that is mounted inside of the solar panel array. I designed 3D printed parts to enhance the structural integrity of the long shaft on the buoy that holds the anemometers. Designing the buoy parts has deepened my understanding of SOLIDWORKS, manufacturing techniques, and embedded systems design.
